Space enhancing loft conversions

Converting a loft is the obvious choice when it comes to adding space and value to a home. There's a variety of styles and solutions to choose from, as these UK projects demonstrate

Plans had already been drawn up for a loft conversion when DJ Moore Lofts (djmoorelofts.co.uk) was contacted by the homeowners, but the company could see ways to further improve the layout and storage. ‘Our structural engineer produced calculations that increased the floor space, and we moved a 300-litre horizontal water tank into a large cupboard,’ says company director, Daniel Moore.

‘The space now consists of a generous bedroom, a dressing area and an en suite, with a set of double Velux Cabrio windows on the rear of the roof, and a further roof window to the front.

‘Our stair manufacturer was asked to make all the newels and spindles for the new staircase to match the old one perfectly,’ continues Daniel. ‘To fit the new stairs and the Velux light tunnel above, we had to reposition a wall and a doorway to a spare room, which has made the existing hallway brighter.’

Italian inspiration

A loft extension inspired by memories of Italy has transformed the roof of an ornate, double-fronted property set on the edge of an old brick quarry. Two brightly coloured, symmetrical colonnaded bay windows, made from painted timber, now enjoy views across the London skyline – one serving a bedroom, the other a bathroom and dressing suite. The bed, bath and shower are all positioned to respond to the panoramic view, with the small side window picking up the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf.
