Don't let access or safety concerns hamper your garden design-you can create a safe environment without compromising on style

Safety first

A simple rope barrier will demarcate the edge of a raised patio, or install a safety wall Creating an adaptive garden is surprisingly simple and, in most cases, affordable. Whether looking to aid an elderly relative, accommodate wheelchairs and pushchairs, protect a roaming toddler or cater to the needs of friends or family with disabilities, these little amendments can make a huge difference.

How do I make my garden pond safe from falling in?

A net over a pond is a popular option but it won’t stop someone falling in, while fencing can disrupt the garden's sense of flow. Instead, pond grilles, like SafaDeck, can be installed just below the waterline so they are invisible to the eye but provide a strong barrier to prevent drowning. 'For maximum safety, the grille should be installed above the water to prevent contact between the child’s face and the water,' advise experts from SafaDeck. 'However, for older children or where the perceived risk is lower, customers often prefer the grille installed just below the waterline - we recommend a maximum depth of 25mm. At this depth, the grids and beams become discreet but still provide a barrier to deep water entry.' A benefit of SafaDeck is that it is easy to install and the grille can be raised or lowered at any time to suit individual needs. If opting for a grille, ensure it complies with RoSPA safety recommendations and can take an adult’s weight without buckling or breaking.

HOMES FOR HOW WE LIVE NOW

Our homes are constantly evolving — we alter floor plans to open up spaces or enclose new rooms; pantries are converted to back kitchens, snug's to home offices, en-suite bathrooms to dressing rooms. So what do our homes say about our tastes and priorities? We asked the experts
