A stylish island can anchor a kitchen design, making a central place to prep, serve and gather with friends or family. Chances are you'll want a breakfast bar at the island for perching with a cup of coffee in the morning or maybe a glass of wine in the evening, somewhere to chat with a friend or help your child with homework. But think beyond the usual rectangular shape with a regimented line of bar stools, and consider an inviting curve to collect around. Whatever the shape, We recommend an overhang of at least 40cm to ensure that you can get your knees under the worktop when sitting at the bar,' advises Melissa Klink, creative director of Harvey Jones.
