From Tuscan to Timeless

A total renovation of this once dark and dated kitchen allowed for a fresh, English aesthetic to breathe new life into a perfect workspace for the restauranteur homeowners.

MIGHTY MATERIALS. Terri opted for elements that served both function and style. Perimeter counters and the backsplash are leathered Glacier quartzite with a blend of green, grey, white, and gold veining. The island counter is Negresco leathered quartzite with dramatic black and hints of white. The pantry flooring is a customized marble mosaic, while the main floor-ing is a white oak. "As the clients had installed the floors about five years prior, they were hesitant to tear it all out due to the footprint change," says Terri. "Fortunately, I happened to have someone who had the ability to custom match the existing flooring and mill new boards to lace into the existing. He did a brilliant job at blending it."

Terri was careful to figure out the homeowners' specific patterns of behavior in the kitchen to maximize the usefulness of her new design, especially regarding the addition of extensive storage. "As the family has a regular morning routine including coffee, smoothies and toast we designed an appliance garage in a pull-out to house the blender, coffee maker and toaster," says Terri. "Below it we added a craft ice maker and an under-counter freezer to house the frozen fruit they use to make smoothies each day."

I BELOW I LIGHT IT UP. Once flow and functional concerns were addressed, Terri sought to ensure the homeowners desire for a timeless design full of character would be met. "The pendants over the island are vintage 1920's pendants bought from a vintage lighting store in New York," she says. "Fortunately, much like me, the client loves the idea of storied elements. The sconces add a little bit of a more modern vibe but in a warm brass tone to compliment the hardware and plumbing fixtures."
