Colour is the easiest and most affordable way to lift your bedroom whether you have period features, as here, or a plain space. Restful green is a foolproof choice for a tranquil vibe and a light shade on walls with a deeper hue on the ceiling creates a cocoon of calm.

1 PERSONALITY AND PANACHE 

Inject personality into your room with a DIY paint job and rearrange your furniture to maximise the layout. Here, the white walls and ceiling were painted with a chic green, Dulux Grass Sands, and the bed moved to the opposite wall. Gorgeous!

2 MARVELLOUS MARBLE 

A marble mantel really stands the test of time. Keep it looking current with books, vases and hang a fave print above it as the finishing touch.

3 CUE IT UP

When choosing your paint colour, take your cues from the room and then theme the rest of the scheme around those shades. Here, the pink and green in the stained glass window (not pictured) informed the colours.

4 GET A HANDLE ON IT 

Reuse door handles and hinges if possible - simply polish with brass cleaner. If screws are damaged, replace them all with same-sized brass screws. Keep your closet consistent by choosing drawer handles to match the original door hardware.

LIGHT SHOW 

Don't spend your money on a new light fixture, use metal spray paint and new shades to update.
