Little wonders
Australian House & Garden Magazine

Love the look of a tree but pushed for room? Here are some miniature options that will make a big impact in a small space, writes Tammy Huynh.

A tree is a beautiful and versatile addition to the garden. It can serve as a backdrop or focal point, providing height, structure, drama and seasonal interest. But, surprisingly, you don't need a large garden to grow a tree. With many homeowners opting for smaller backyards, dwarf or compact trees are more popular than ever and are ideal for pots or garden beds.
CREPE MYRTLE (LAGERSTROEMIA INDICA HYBRIDS)
The crepe myrtle is named for the vibrant crepepapery flowers that cover the tree from late summer to early autumn. Blooms come in shades of red, pink, mauve, and white. As the tree is deciduous, the foliage adopts wonderful shades of copper and red before falling, revealing the silvery mottled bark. Trees grow four to eight metres tall, but can be kept compact with an annual prune in winter. Many of the newer varieties, like the Indian Summer and Magic Series, have been bred to remain on the small side.
