Guided by a fresh yet earthy aesthetic, interior designers Natalie Owens and Erin McKinnon have merged the traditional and the contemporary in this 1960s home

WHY DID YOUR CLIENTS BUY THIS HOUSE? The couple loved the prime location in one of Halifax's most sought-after neighbourhoods. With two children, aged six and eight, they appreciated having a school within walking distance and being a 30-minute drive to the ocean.

HOW DID YOU COME TO BE INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT? Our interior design studio, Stil James, worked with Lily's father on his waterfront home and Mike was our corporate real estate broker who helped us secure our first office space, so the connection felt natural.

HOW INVOLVED WERE THE HOMEOWNERS? Very — but in the best way! They trusted us to curate the right selections, keeping choices streamlined while allowing us to lead the creative direction. Our role was to ensure everything aligned with the aesthetic they loved. At the same time, they worked closely with Mike's best friend, architect David Bourque, who was ahead of us in shaping the structural vision for the addition.
