Emma and Terry Hazelwood combined the old and the new when they turned a listed barn into a contemporary haven

After years of transforming properties for clients, Emma and Terry Hazelwood decided the time was right to create a home for themselves that reflected their expertise and creativity. The couple, who own Hazelwood Building & Interiors, specialise in restoring listed barns, farmhouses and oast houses, so it seemed fitting to take on a project close to their hearts. The opportunity arose in 2018 when they discovered a plot in Kent featuring a 17th-century oak-framed barn and spectacular countryside views.

The purchase, however, wasn’t straightforward. Boundaries needed renegotiating and the couple acquired additional land to accommodate their vision. ‘We didn’t like the original plans, so we went back to the drawing board,’ Emma recalls. Their vision was ambitious: a contemporary barn seamlessly linked to the historic structure by a striking glass walkway.
