+ You don't need an embroidery hoop for this project because the thick wool fabric is easy to hold in the hand

1 Draw your design on paper or copy the template at www.gathered.how. Make a stencil, cut it out and pin it in place on the beret. Use chalk to trace over the stencil. Alternatively, you can tack the outlines with large stitches.

2 Cut a length of embroidery thread and separate three strands - thread the needle with these and make a knot at one end.
