Is AI Smarter than a Numismatist?

WHAT IS AI? 

“AI, or Artificial intelligence, refers to the field of computer science that focuses on the development of intelligent machines that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. AI aims to create computer systems or programs capable of perceiving and understanding the environment, reasoning, learning from experience, and making decisions or taking actions to achieve specific goals,” per a definition generated within three seconds by ChatGPT.

WHAT IS CHATGPT?

“ChatGPT is an AI-based conversational agent developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT is designed to understand and generate human-like text responses in a conversational manner. It has been trained on a vast amount of data from the internet, allowing it to generate coherent and contextually relevant responses to a wide range of queries and prompts,” per ChatGPT.

AI FOR COIN COLLECTORS

What can AI do for coin collectors? The answer is plenty! AI provides in-depth answers to routine questions incredibly fast. Trying ChatGPT myself, I found that many of the answers were predictable and others were not. But there weren’t surprising answers that I didn’t expect. Many of the answers were generalizations but were accurate.

For example, asking the question, “What United States Coins should I collect,” provided a reasonable answer.

“Collecting United States coins can be an enjoyable hobby that offers a glimpse into history, artistry, and numismatics. ‘e choice of which coins to collect depends on personal interests, budget, and goals. Here are some popular options for United States coin collectors:
