After losing both legs in a devastating crash, Billy Monger defied the odds to set a world record at the Ironman World Championships. In this exclusive interview, he reveals to Men’s Fitness the grit, training, and mindset behind his incredible achievement.

Instead of letting this tragedy define him, he turned it into fuel for an extraordinary journey. Since then, Billy has become an advocate for adaptive sports, a fundraising hero, and now, a world-record-breaking para-triathlete.
In December 2024, Billy made history by smashing the Ironman World Record for a double amputee at the prestigious Kona event in Hawaii.

Men’s Fitness: Billy, could you give us some insight into your training for Kona? What kind of hours were you putting in, and how did you balance swimming, cycling, and running?
Billy Monger: I started training in October 2023, just over a year before the event. It sounds like a long time, but given my limited experience with running, we had to be really careful to avoid injuries. For the first couple of months, we slowly integrated running into my training plan.
