Lose It!
|Volume 49
Yes, you do! In the world of health and wellness, seaweed has become a buzzword for good reason: it has extraordinary health benefits.

6 consuming of seaweed benefits
1 THYROID HEALTH
Seaweed is especially rich in iodine, a mineral that is essential for thyroid function, as it is a key component in the production of thyroid hormones. These hormones regulate numerous processes in the body, including metabolism, growth and development.
A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that seaweed supplements improved iodine levels and supported thyroid function in people with mild iodine deficiency.
Another study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that kombu significantly improved thyroid hormone levels in people with mild underactive thyroid (subclinical hypothyroidism).
It is important to note, however, that too much iodine can also lead to thyroid issues, particularly hyperthyroidism. As with everything, balance is key. If you are incorporating seaweed into your diet, particularly through supplements, be mindful of the quantity you’re consuming, and speak to your doctor if you have any concerns. The recommended daily amount of iodine for adults is 150 μg. Seaweed varieties provide different levels of iodine:
Kombu: 1450–2300 μg per 100g
Wakame: 350–570 μg per 100g
Nori: 50–100 μg per 100g
