Retinal Detachment A Silent Threat to Vision

Health Vision

|

June 2025

Retinal detachment is a serious eye condition that demands immediate medical attention. Often painless and subtle in its early stages, it can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly.

- Dr. Hareesh K V Abhishek Nethradhama

Retinal Detachment A Silent Threat to Vision

The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye responsible for receiving light and sending visual signals to the brain. Retinal detachment occurs when this layer peels away from its underlying support tissue, disrupting the supply of oxygen and nutrients essential for retinal cells. When left untreated, the retina can deteriorate, resulting in irreversible vision loss or blindness in the affected eye.

Types of Retinal Detachment

There are three main types of retinal detachment:

Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment: The most common type, caused by a tear or hole in the retina. This allows fluid from the vitreous (gellike substance in the eye) to seep underneath, separating the retina from the eye wall.

Tractional Retinal Detachment: Occurs when scar tissue on the retina’s surface contracts and pulls the retina away. This is often seen in individuals with diabetic retinopathy.
