What you Need to Know About this Common Heart Defect
Ventricular Septal Defect is a manageable condition with proper medical care. Parents of infants with VSD should work closely with paediatric cardiologists to determine the best treatment plan. Advances in cardiac care ensure excellent outcomes for most patients.
A Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a common congenital heart defect where an abnormal opening exists in the wall (septum) separating the heart's two lower chambers, the ventricles. This opening allows oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood to mix, forcing the heart to work harder to pump blood efficiently. While some VSDs close on their own, others require medical intervention.
Causes of VSD
Most VSDs are congenital, meaning they are present at birth. The exact cause is often unknown, but contributing factors may include:
- Genetic conditions (e.g., Down syndrome)
- Maternal infections during pregnancy (e.g., rubella)
- Family history of heart defects
- Exposure to harmful substances (alcohol, drugs, certain medications) during pregnancy
