Blepharitis, a common yet often misunderstood eye condition, refers to the inflammation of the eyelids. It affects people of all ages and can lead to chronic discomfort and vision complications if left untreated.
What Causes Blepharitis?
Blepharitis occurs due to various factors that can be broadly categorized into two types.
1. Anterior Blepharitis: This type affects the outer edge of the eyelids where the eyelashes are located. It is commonly caused by:
- Bacterial infections, particularly Staphylococcus bacteria.
- Seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows).
- Allergic reactions to eye makeup or other irritants.
2. Posterior Blepharitis: This type affects the inner edge of the eyelids, closer to the eye. It is often linked to:
- Dysfunction of the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of tears.
- Skin conditions such as rosacea or acne. l Hormonal imbalances that influence gland function.
Symptoms
Blepharitis manifests through a range of symptoms, which can vary in intensity:
- Redness and swelling of the eyelids.
- Burning or stinging sensations in the eyes.
- Crusty or flaky debris at the base of the eyelashes.
- Excessive tearing or dryness.
- Sensitivity to light (photophobia).
- Gritty or foreign body sensation in the eyes.
- Frequent blinking or irritation during contact lens use.
