Govt soon to introduce new Drugs, Devices & Cosmetics Bill in Parliament

THE draft of the new Drugs, Medical Devices and Cosmetics Act, which has been on the cards for almost three years to replace the existing Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, is expected to be tabled in Parliament during the upcoming winter session, according to an agency report.
According to a report from PTI, the DCGI Dr Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi has presented the draft at a high-level meeting of the Union Health Ministry, chaired by Minister JP Nadda.
The new legislation will grant the central drug regulatory authority the statutory powers to ensure stringent quality tests and surveillance of drugs, medical devices and cosmetics produced in the country, both for domestic market and exports, said the report attributed to unnamed sources.
The law will enable the CDSCO the statutory powers to take immediate action on spurious or substandard drugs, it added.
