Bird Dogs - Health Matters - Canine Heat Stroke
The Upland Almanac
|Autumn 2024
A large, raw-boned, muscular pointer was cruising across a sea of sage in search of the scent of the greater sage grouse with a spectacular view of the Sawtooth Mountains of southern Idaho in the backdrop. The sun was mid-sky, and the dew was dissipating as the pointer cast farther and faster across the landscape.
The pointer disappeared for about 45 minutes and then reappeared, staggering, disoriented, panting excessively with foam frothing from his jowls. The handler recognized that his bird dog was experiencing heat distress and immediately put him into the game bag of his upland vest and hustled back to his truck.
Every year I hear about this exact scenario on social media, and sometimes the outcome of the bird dog is not so favorable, and the dog succumbs to heat stroke.
Heat injuries in our bird dogs can be life-threatening. Recognizing a heat injury and being prepared to treat your bird dog may save their life.
Remember to be judicious about training, trialing or hunting your bird dogs during the intense heat of the day. Be prepared to stop all activities when environmental temperatures reach 75 to 80 F.
Exercise and muscular activity can rapidly drive your bird dog's body temperature to a life-threatening level. Heat stroke can develop and lead to the death of your athletic partner.Denne historien er fra Autumn 2024-utgaven av The Upland Almanac.

A Civil War vet, let's call him Charles (pronounced with a snobbish lilt, of course), was thoroughly smitten by the parade of high-end American-made, side-by-side, hammerless “automatic” (ejector) shotguns emerging from America's esteemed “Gun-Makers Row”— New England, New York and Pennsylvania.
