Popular with upper-class gentlemen in Victorian times, sword canes were often carried for self-defence but they also had other, slightly more pedestrian uses

Getting to the point

SWORD canes are objects that evoke fascination and are now highly sought after by collectors.

Although often viewed as novelties today, they once served a very real purpose, harking back to a period in Britain prior to the formal establishment of official police forces. During this time, individuals were largely responsible for securing their own personal protection, and local communities were expected to essentially police themselves. For this reason, it was not unusual for private citizens to arm themselves for their own safety.
