Clay shooting for game shots
The Field
|July 2023
Everything the fieldsportsman needs to know about clay shooting, from gun choice, technique and stance to how to tackle specific targets

MANY more-than-competent game shots can struggle when it comes to shooting clays. But whether it is a spot of close season (or mid-season) practice or simply a sim day with pals, the clay-busting environment requires different techniques. Here is how to refine new methods when you are engaging with artificial targets.
BEFORE YOU START
SAFETY
Additionally to the rules in the field (guns unloaded, unobstructed and never pointed at anyone), when clay shooting you should move locations with a slipped gun (as game shooting now). When not slipped or in use, guns should be open and empty when in the vicinity of a shooting position. In the 'cage', only load the gun with the barrels over the front bar (assuming there is one). The gun should be unloaded, or checked unloaded and clear (unobstructed), at the end of shooting with barrels still over the front bar. Do not turn to leave the cage with a closed gun. Finally, beware of anything popping up in front of you unexpectedly when shooting. Don't forget safety glasses, ear protection and a hat or cap.
