Out of This World

OUR COVER STORY THIS MONTH needs some explanation—but not the man himself. Timothée Chalamet is perhaps the biggest movie star on the planet (or any planet, per Annie Leibovitz's playfully interstellar cover). And he's set to amaze us all with his new film Marty Supreme when it opens at Christmas.

No, it's the extraordinary photographs Annie captured of Chalamet in the pages that follow that require a word or two. They were taken in the middle of the Nevada desert, in a massive land-art installation called City by Michael Heizer, which took more than a half century to construct, opened in 2022, requires a reservation to visit (good luck), and inspires mythic reverence among those precious few who have seen it.
