POWER DRESSING

For the fourth edition of Boucheron's Histoire de Style, Creative Director Claire Choisne revisits the couture heritage of Frédéric Boucheron through the lens of ceremonial attire
"The Power of Couture" offers a modern High Jewellery interpretation of ceremonial dressing. Personally, what is the appeal of ceremonial attire?
Firstly, the collection is inspired by couture. With this new chapter of Histoire de Style, I wanted to pay tribute to the Maison's heritage. Frédéric Boucheron, the founder of the Maison, grew up surrounded by rare precious materials, such as silk and lace; his father being a mercer and then a draper. This environment influenced his approach to High Jewellery: Frédéric had a taste for textiles, as well as for the fashion of the times. Within the archives of the Maison, there are numerous pieces that draw inspiration from the world of couture. I'm thinking of all these knots, tassels, pompoms. I wanted to approach the theme of couture, but in a different way without the fuss, so to speak opting for a modern and powerful reinterpretation.
Ceremonial attire piqued my interest because the great clients of the Maison many of whom were historical figures were often seen and depicted in dress corresponding to their rank and status. In the past, Maison Boucheron crafted emblematic pieces for ceremonial uniforms. Shoulder bows, for example, were quite popular among Boucheron's creations in the second half of the 19th century. An official portrait of Queen Elisabeth II was one of my inspirations. I was struck by all these symbols of power, worn by royalties: bows are symbols of status, the aiguillette denotes distinction. Wearing a medal symbolises the person's belonging and consideration. Accumulating medals demonstrates achievement. All these forms and symbols are captivating.
