On 8 May 1945, the nation finally welcomed a new dawn of peace as World War Two drew to a close across Europe when Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allied forces.

This week, to celebrate the victory in Europe, there's a range of programming to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday.

"This is the moment to reflect on the whole war effort, not just those who fought abroad but also those on the home front, says Sophie Raworth, who is helming the BBC's coverage, which includes a fly-past and a Service of Thanksgiving.

Raworth will also speak to those who lived through the war about their memories.
