Why did a serial killer go undetected for decades?

Forgotten victims

In 2010 and 2011 detectives began investigating the murders of at least 10 sex workers whose bodies were all found along a stretch of the same beach on Long Island, New York.

But with many of the women reported missing years earlier, and some of the deaths dating back to at least 1993, why did it take so long for the authorities to realise a serial killer was at large?

That's the question Netflix's three-part true-crime docuseries Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer poses as it explores the stigma of the victims' work and possible police corruption.
