It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since acclaimed Scottish crime writer Val McDermid scored a TV hit with psychological thriller Wire in the Blood. This week, another of McDermid’s bestselling novels is brought to life on ITV in the gripping three-part crime drama Karen Pirie.

From the makers of Line of Duty and Bodyguard, it features Lauren Lyle in the title role of DS Karen Pirie, a young and dedicated Scottish police officer in a force full of men.

Karen receives a fast-track promotion when she’s tasked with reopening the investigation into the brutal murder of barmaid Rosie Duff, found stabbed to death in St Andrews in 1996.
