Crackling fires, snowy weather and holiday celebrations make for a cozy season, but winter can be tough on eyes. Dr. David Calkins, Ph.D., ophthalmology professor at Vanderbilt School of Medicine and director of the Vanderbilt Vision Research Center, explains the risks and offers advice for protecting your sight.

Beware of cold air

“Winter’s dry air can lead to dry eye. Think of your eye as the windshield of your car. It’s subjected to pollutants and particulates that must be washed off with tears when you blink but also with humidity. Over-the-counter eye drops can be used daily to reduce the irritation that comes with dry air. Another trick I like: In the evening lie down with a hot washcloth over your eyelids. That can reduce inflammation.”
