Ruby Franke was Kevin Franke’s dream girl when they met in 2000. But as a self-proclaimed “nerd,” the engineering consultant felt insecure while dating her—and even after they were married that same year. “She really wanted me to be the perfect husband, the evenkeeled but strong patriarch of the family,” Kevin, 46, says in the new Hulu docuseries Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke. “But I wasn’t.”

For the first time, Kevin and his oldest son, Chad, 20, are speaking in depth in the docuseries and to People about the house of horrors created by the YouTube mom influencer and the family’s controversial therapist Jodi Hildebrandt that left their lives in shambles. In the three-part series streaming Feb. 27, Kevin and the couple’s two oldest children, Chad and Shari, 22, open up about the Mormon family’s rise to social media stardom with 2.5 million followers: Kevin says they earned $100,000 a month at the peak of Ruby’s YouTube channel 8 Passengers, launched in 2015, which documented her life with Kevin and their six children.
