A COUPLE COZIES INTO THEIR 1940S HIDEAWAY IN THE HIGHLANDS REGION OF NEW JERSEY.

Cabin Fervor
Chris and Carol Kaas filled their log cabin with rustic finds, including a twig table and chalkware bear on the porch, this photo. Carol says the vintage sconce, opposite, "helps take you back in time."
It's a typical Saturday in the Highland Lakes, New Jersey, cabin of Chris and Carol Kaas. Chris stokes the crackling fire in the fireplace, Carol dishes up popcorn and guests battle it out in a spirited game of spades. “It's such a lovely way to spend time together,” Carol says. “It's all about relaxing, and late-night games in pajamas.”
That's exactly what the Kaases envisioned when they found the log cabin on Craigslist over a decade ago. It had been painted baby blue, so they dug in to restore its rugged 1940s character. The first weekend they stayed there, they picked up gallons of brown paint and began covering the blue exterior—much to the joy of residents who stopped by to welcome them. Carol, a decoupage artist, learned how to chink logs. Chris, an editor for NBC News, built a hand-hewn deck with the help of Carol's dad and brother. He also carved the sign that jokingly announces the cabin as a lodge and resort. “Kri-Kar-Roo,” as it's called, is named after Chris, Carol and their cat, Rooster.Carol's love of thrifting and the couple's shared interest in old signage and ephemera led them to flea markets in search of vintage light fixtures, rustic tables and campy accessories. “We humbly try to mimic the Adirondack style, such as twig, log and natural elements for a rustic appearance,” Carol says.
