FIREFIGHTER VARSHA AVHAD
An exceptional trailblazer in Mumbai’s fire service, Varsha Avhad has broken barriers as the first woman firefighter in the Mumbai Fire Brigade. Her courage and determination in this traditionally male-dominated field have inspired countless others to follow in her footsteps. She is now a training instructor at the Wadala Training Centre, where she continues to shape the future of the brigade by mentoring the next generation of firefighters. She is known for her dedication and leadership, and proud of the fact that her work makes a real difference in emergencies. She is also passionate about inspiring more women to consider this career.
Excerpts from an interview… “My biggest achievement has been earning my place in the fire brigade. Firefighting is a demanding field, both physically and mentally, and I’m incredibly proud to be part of a team that is dedicated to saving lives.
“My success mantra is strength, courage and compassion. In this line of work, you need physical and mental strength, the courage to put yourself in difficult situations, and the compassion to serve others selflessly. These three qualities keep me grounded and focused on the impact I want to make.
“I want to keep growing within the fire brigade, take on leadership roles, and continue to advance my skills in emergency response. I’m also committed to mentoring other women interested in firefighting and advocating for more support for women in the field. There’s still a lot to be done, and I’m excited to be a part of that change.”Denne historien er fra March - April 2025-utgaven av Femina.
