Ahead of appraisal season, Kalwyna Rathod puts together a guide to getting the promotion you rightly deserve
Appraisal season will soon be upon us and it's the time employees are hopeful of not just getting the big raise but also the all-important promotion. Climbing up the next rung on the ladder to success takes more than hard work, sincerity and dedication, so read on and make the changes that you need to in your professional life.
LAY THE GROUNDWORK
Kolkata-based Mansi Poddar, psychotherapist and founder of the Heal.Grow.Thrive Foundation, believes it is crucial to be proud of your work. "Competence, diligence, intelligence, loyalty all matter, but what matters most is the inherent will to do the best work possible. The work is what matters, and employees who take it personally, who own their work as a reflection of their values, and who take pride in doing good work, are the employees that can be trusted with positions of responsibility."
It is also important to make your boss aware that you want the promotion. "It might seem quite simple, but expressing your desire for a particular promotion can be very helpful," Mansi avers. "Sometimes, the management might not know you want it, or has not thought of you as a candidate, especially if it's outside your current department. Often, management will tell you what you need to do to get the position if they know you want it. Be humble, inquisitive, passionate, and hungry," she adds.
