Sigma Corporation is a renowned Japanese manufacturer of photographic lenses and cameras, with all production based entirely in Japan. Headquartered in Kanagawa, Sigma operates its sole manufacturing facility in Aizu, Fukushima. Founded in 1961 by Michihiro Yamaki, the company remains family-owned and is now led by his son, Kazuto Yamaki. This independence allows Sigma to pursue its own vision of craftsmanship and innovation without external pressures.

The Aizu factory, established in 1973, serves as the heart of Sigma's operations. Every stage of production—from concept development and optical engineering to assembly, quality control, and parts sourcing—is carried out in-house. This centralized approach ensures seamless collaboration, rapid response times, and uncompromising quality. Sigma's deep connection to the Tohoku region has developed strong community ties and enabled the company to nurture multi-generational expertise among its workforce.
Driven by a philosophy of “engineering for art,” Sigma continues to push the boundaries of photographic technology. For over six decades, the company has delivered high-performance tools that empower photographers and filmmakers to express their creative vision. As global demand evolves—from traditional photography to cinema, vlogging, and OTT content—Sigma remains committed to supporting artistic freedom and innovation across diverse platforms and cultures.
Sigma was founded in 1961, and innovation has been at the heart of your brand ever since. Could you share Sigma's core philosophy and motto?
When my father established Sigma, the lens manufacturing industry was already crowded with many players. As a newcomer, it was a real challenge to survive. Being an engineer himself, my father placed a strong emphasis on investing in technology and manufacturing from the very beginning. That commitment to technological innovation became the foundation of Sigma's philosophy.
Even today, innovation remains our top priority. Among independent lens manufacturers, only a few remain—Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, and Cosina. We've managed to thrive in this highly competitive space because we've consistently focused on advancing our technology. Whether it's photo lenses or other optical products, our dedication to innovation has helped us stand out and stay resilient.
