We chat with visual artist and stylist, Azhar (Azzi) Abrahams

SALAAM TO STYLE

It all started at the Cornerstore, a multipurpose space in Cape Town dedicated to streetwear, art, music and more. “It served as a hub for creative exchange, which greatly influenced my own style journey,” says Azhar Abrahams, “and contributed to the broader culture by fostering a community of like-minded individuals passionate about fashion and creativity. I began to pay attention to what I wore, realising that my style could be a powerful expression of my identity.”

He also had the opportunity to meet influential figures in the local fashion scene, such as Anees Petersen, Salik Harris and Shukrie Joel. “Each of them has a distinct style, reminiscent of the way older uncles in my community dressed but with a unique flair that truly caught my eye. Their personal style and the work they produced as fashion designers was a significant source of inspiration for me.”

Today, as a graphic designer, visual artist and Bash.com stylist, Azhar’s professional portfolio of work is underpinned by a deep connection to his cultural beliefs and values.
