During the excavation of Henry VIII's flagship the Mary Rose, divers discovered the wooden elements of up to eight shields which would originally have been fitted with matchlock guns

On 2 December 1981, divers at the wreck of the Mary Rose found a convex circular object 22in (56cm) in diameter, formed of two layers of wooden laths, each 0.1–0.2in (3-5mm) thick. Copper strips decorated with an oak-leaf pattern radiated from a hole at the centre, and staining around the hole suggested that a metal boss would have originally been present.
