When the Heats Cools Off

Ken Duke of Harrogate, North Yorkshire remembers:
-

The year was 1978, two years after we got married. Having been no further north than Norfolk at that time, we both liked the idea of seeing the Highlands of Scotland. We searched through the brochures and plumped for two weeks in a self-catering bungalow a short drive from the so-called capital of the Highlands, Inverness.
We set off early in July in our trusty Ford Escort. Although nearly 10 years old, it was pretty reliable on long runs, although my fingers were crossed that we would not break down in some remote wasteland. We didn’t. As the journey was almost 450 miles, we needed an overnight stop and found a house doing bed and breakfast in Jedburgh, just over the border. I recall a superb plate of creamy porridge being served up as part of the breakfast.
