Daddy's Shirt
Champak
|July First 2025
Little Krish was eagerly waiting for his new dress. In the meantime, his mother spread a new shirt for his father on the bed. But he had some urgent work to attend to, so he went out without putting it on.
Little Krish was fascinated by this shirt with its pink dots. He thought, I must wear it and walk down the road. People will think I'm as big as my dad.
So, without telling his mother, he put it on and silently slipped out of the house.
On the way, Harish, his father's colleague, greeted him with a smile, “Morning, sir, are you not going to Kolkata, this year?”
“Oh, no. I'm afraid I can't make it this year.” Nervously, Krish mumbled a hello and ran away from the spot. He was surprised and thought, Do I really look like my dad?
When the postman saw him, he got down from his bike and said, “What luck! Here are your two envelopes. Please sign here.”
Krish wrote his name in capital letters. He became quite nervous. Oh, so many things are happening to me because I'm wearing Daddy's shirt. Is it some sort of magic or ...?
Then, pushing his handcart with heaps of apples, grapes, bananas and other fruits, a fruit-vendor greeted him, “Sir, buy these fresh fruits, please.”
Krish tried to avoid him, “B— but I don’t have money.”
“Oh, don’t put me to shame. You're not unfamiliar to me. Money comes and goes, sir. Even if you can’t pay me today, a big gentleman like you can certainly do it some other day.”
He counted a bunch of bananas and put them in a bag, “Here’s a dozen, sir. Right from Bhusawal.”

GRAVE MISTAKES
“Here’s your new school,” Dad said as he pulled over at the gate of Silver Pines School. Courtesy of his dad’s frequent job transfers, Omi is always the new student. This was his fourth school in the last eight years. Standing at the gates of his new school, clutching his bag, he tried not to look nervous. His family had just moved to the town a week ago, and everything still smelled new—new books, new uniform, new trouble.
