After years of tension, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth finally call it quits right before their 12th anniversary

They had been trying to make it work for years. In 2020, in a series of emotional confessions, Reese Witherspoon admitted to breaking down in tears and feeling "overwhelmed" shortly before she and husband Jim Toth sold their Pacific Palisades, Calif., home. The next year, Reese was spotted without her wedding ring, as the pair unloaded their $21.5 million Brentwood, Calif., mansion and she paid $18 million for an estate in her hometown of Nashville. "Tensions are high," a friend told In Touch at the time. "Their marriage is hanging on by a thread."

And this year, it finally snapped. "It is with a great deal of care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce," they announced in a joint statement on March 24, two days before their 12th wedding anniversary. "It's no secret that this has been brewing for some time, and the truth is they grew apart," says a source. But with $900 million at stake from the 2021 sale of her media company, Hello Sunshine, "friends say it's getting nasty already."
