While a campus being terrorised by a faceless predator on a killing spree might sound like something straight out of a '90s slasher film, it is also what took place at the University of Florida at the start of that decade. Five Gainesville college students were gruesomely murdered over four days at the start of the fall semester of August 1990.

Four women and one man would lose their lives in stabbing attacks that were so vicious they earned the murderer the nickname of "The Gainesville Ripper".

Today, a mural on the city's 34th Street Wall bears the names of his victims next to red hearts. "Remember 1990," it reads.
