A REVEALING NEW DOCUSERIES PEELS BACK THE LAYERS OF THE ENIGMA

- Carolyn Hiblen

'I desperately want to be LIKED'

She may have spent decades in the spotlight as a Spice Girl, football WAG, mum and fashion designer, but, despite the many public faces of Victoria Beckham, few can claim to really know the woman behind the headlines.

That's all set to change now, though, with the release of her eponymous three-part Netflix docuseries, which premiered on October 9.

Comprised of new and rare archival footage, along with candid interviews with her family and friends – including former US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, designers Tom Ford and Donatella Versace, and actress Eva Longoria - the series offers an intimate look at her life and many reinventions, as it follows Victoria while she prepares for the biggest runway show of her fashion career: Paris Fashion Week.

A polarising figure throughout much of her career, the doco opens with a number of clips - from her time as a Spice Girl, during her relationship and wedding to football superstar David Beckham, and her early days as a mum - interspersed with current-day footage of her working out in her home gym. The video is overlayed with just a taste of the many headlines she's garnered over the years - getting progressively more unflattering and outlandish.

image“The former Spice Girl has seen her clothing and accessories brand grow into a business with a £30 million turnover,” it begins, before the tide changes: “Victoria Beckham, she’s been exhibiting some very diva-like behaviour.” The pile-on continues: “I don’t think Victoria’s made it through her own talent – I think she used the media to get to where she is,” and, “The current feeling about her is: just give it a rest, love.” And that’s all before the opening credits roll.
