GH'S SONYA EDDY DIES AT 55

Sonya Eddy, who played Nurse Epiphany Johnson on GH beginning in 2006, and was also a fixture on the SOAPnet GH spin-off, GH: NIGHT SHIFT (2007-08), passed away unexpectedly on December 19, 2022 at the age of 55.

Born in Concord, CA, Eddy graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1992 with a degree in theater and dance. She began her career on the stage, then built an impressive and diverse primetime resumé, with recurring roles on MARRIED... WITH CHILDREN, ER, SEINFELD and THE DREW CAREY SHOW, among others, and guest-star appearances on such series as CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, FAMILY MATTERS, GLEE, HOME IMPROVEMENT and MURPHY BROWN. Eddy also had roles in movies such as Coach Carter, Barbershop and Daddy Daycare.

According to Casting Director Mark Teschner, it was clear from the start that Eddy was perfect for the role of Epiphany. “The casting process where Sonya was concerned was very simple,” he tells Digest. “After reading the script, I came up with a few ideas of established actresses and showed the producers their demo reels. The moment we started watching, it was a done deal. She was the epitome of what we were looking for. She had great comic timing, she was tough, but had tremendous heart. It’s a lasting tribute to Sonya’s talent that she took a short-term role and turned it into an indelible run on GENERAL HOSPITAL. She was a beautiful person and a beautiful actress.”
