IN A shocking but highly welcome change, thousands of women given a devastating breast-cancer diagnosis may not need excruciating treatments such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy!

About 20 percent of breast cancer cases in the U.S. are categorized as ductal carcinoma in situ — DCIS, an early stage of the disease — when abnormal, precancerous cells are found within the milk ducts but have not spread.

The study found that women who adopted a “watch-and-wait” strategy — careful monitoring, including having a mammogram every six months — were no more likely to develop breast cancer after two years than women who underwent surgery to remove the malignant tissue.
