Hollywood's finest celebrate at the 97th Academy Awards with surprise wins, emotional speeches and the best in red-carpet fashion

You can always expect surprises on Oscar night – and this year’s show was no exception. The 97th Academy Award ceremony – held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and hosted by Conan O’Brien – was full of unexpected wins, shocking upsets and a glamorous night featuring fabulous fashion.

Topping the best-dressed list was Wicked star Ariana Grande, who looked so ethereal, she may as well have descended and emerged from a pink bubble.

“I’m floating!” the 31-year-old told Access Hollywood on the red carpet. “I can’t believe I get to wear custom Schiaparelli at the Oscars and sing with my best friend.”

She was, of course, referring to her witchy co-star, Cynthia Erivo. The pair – nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively – opened the show with an incredible medley from the film. “I think along this journey, I’ve shared a lot more of myself than I have previously,” Cynthia, 38, told E!, discussing the whirlwind surrounding Wicked. “And it’s felt really freeing.”

The star continued to deliver Elphaba vibes in a dramatic velvet Louis Vuitton gown, complete with a sculptural cut-out collar appearing from an intricate bow-shaped bustier.

“I wanted a big dress for the Oscars if I made it here, and here we are in this wonderful, big, giant dress,” said Cynthia, beaming. “And I feel amazing in it!”
