Trading in their gowns and tuxes for gardening gear, these famous faces find peace in getting down in the dirt and back to nature

GREEN THUMBS

Many of our favourite royal, Hollywood and Canadian stars are embracing the earth-friendly movement, beginning in their own backyards. Escaping into nature can not only offer mental health benefits (as the Princess of Wales has noted) but also have financial gains - King Charles's Duchy Originals products and the Duchess of Sussex's As Ever wares, for example, are for sale online.

For the King, who began growing organic produce in 1985, it's more than a hobby - it's a way of life. “As a child, my sister [Princess Anne] and I were given a little plot at Buckingham Palace at the back of the border for growing vegetables,” he noted in a 2010 BBC documentary. “But it's not until you have somewhere of your own that it becomes more possible.” His daughter-in-law Meghan feels the same now that her dream of sustainable living is taking root on the sweeping grounds of her Montecito, Calif., home.

Here, in honour of Earth Day, we celebrate 12 famous faces who inspire us with their love of the land.

MEGHAN, DUCHESS OF SUSSEX

"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." Quoting Audrey Hepburn, the Duchess of Sussex, 43, is literally living out that mantra with her current entrepreneurial endeavours, including her Netflix show With Love, Meghan and new lifestyle brand As Ever (which includes jams, honey and "flower sprinkles," among other foodstuffs). With an emphasis on minimizing food waste, keeping bees and growing her own fruit and veg, Meghan is digging into all that the earth has to offer.
