The Queen meets concentration-camp survivors at moving event to mark 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and Anne Frank's death

Lighting a candle as she remembered victims of the Holocaust, the Queen paid an emotional tribute to Anne Frank ahead of the 80th anniversary of her death.

Her Majesty looked sombre as she addressed 600 guests at the event in London in the run-up to Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January. The date marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, where more than 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were killed in gas chambers or perished from starvation, cold and disease.

Remembering the Dutch teenager, who died aged 15 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945, and whose diary of her time in hiding has sold 35 million copies worldwide, Camilla said: "Her story demonstrates that even the quietest, loneliest voice in the wilderness can change the world. That is the true power of words."
