Presidents Trump and Macron enjoy glittering state visits to the UK, with the King and Queen supported as hosts by the Prince and Princess of Wales

If proof were needed of what a huge diplomatic asset the royal family is to Britain, this year's inbound state visits must surely provide it.

The King and Queen rolled out the red carpet for the presidents of Germany and France, the first political leaders from the European Union to be officially received since Brexit. They also welcomed America's President Trump, with all three high-profile occasions perfectly pitched to nurture key relationships.

Demonstrating their growing role on the international stage, the Prince and Princess of Wales provided expert support.

In July, the Waleses greeted France's President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte at RAF Northolt. Kate paid tribute to Gallic fashion in a dusky pink Dior jacket inspired by a piece designed by the founder of the French fashion house.
