The King leads emotional commemorations at the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day

The King and Queen led the nation in marking the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day at a poignant service at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Their Majesties joined Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, political leaders and veterans in observing a two-minute silence to remember the fallen, after laying wreaths of poppies in their memory.

In another part of the arboretum, 100-year-old Royal Navy veteran Alfred Conway watched as his great-grandchildren, Sarah Jayne and James, laid his wreath at the Far East memorials.

The monarch, wearing the Stone Field Marshal Number 4 uniform, saluted as the Last Post sounded, before he and the Queen, wearing her Rifles brooch, looked up to watch a flypast by the Red Arrows.

Eighty years earlier, Japan had surrendered to the Allies, following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which effectively brought the Second World War to an end.
