[ Three Ways ] Tropical Punch

Of African origin, hibiscus or Jamaican sorrel, is an important staple in West Indian and Mexican cooking. Hibiscus is sour enough to make you pucker and tropical enough to evoke the islands. Popularly brewed as a tea, the dried petals play well in savory or sweet recipes, too.

The Increasingly Frequent Threat of Frost

American grapegrowers have yet to pick a single grape, but it’s already clear there will be less Pinot Noir this year. Record-low temperatures struck Oregon’s Willamette Valley—down to 26° F in some areas—in early April, just as the vineyards were starting budbreak. Frost isn’t uncommon in Oregon, but it typically strikes earlier in the season when vines are still dormant. “We have never seen such cold temperatures so late in the season,” vintner Josh Bergström told Wine Spectator.

Napa Valley Makes Way for Microwineries With New Ruling

You might have heard of micro-houses. Here come microwineries. For more than 30 years, Napa County has legally defined “wineries” as producers of 2,000 cases a year or more. In April, the County Board created a new winery category, microwineries, hoping to carve out a spot for small cellars previously denied full winery rights.

Portugal had been on my to-go list for a while. The last time I visited was in 2008, but since then, friends and colleagues have raved about the current experience: distinctive destinations from beach to city, great hotels and restaurants, ease of travel and the fact that English is widely spoken. And of course, for wine lovers, the Douro Valley.

MARE ISLAND A RICH PAST ...

Despite its name, Mare Island is no longer an D island, and there aren't any horses. Rather, it's a 3.5 miles-long peninsula (attached to the mainland by fill from dredging), situated where the Napa River meets the San Pablo Bay, 23 miles north of San Francisco. It's connected to the city of Vallejo by Highway 37 and a causeway.
