AI and emerging digital technologies are transforming broadcasting, but ethical challenges demand a balanced approach for a vibrant, unbiased future

- MOHAMED HARUN BIN ABDUL JABBAR

Broadcasting's Phoenix: Rising from Al's digital flame

The broadcasting sector is experiencing a seismic shift, propelled by digital evolution and the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies are changing how content is produced, distributed, and consumed, opening new possibilities for a more personalised and engaging viewer experience. As the sector evolves, new and revolutionary technologies are emerging, promising to enhance broadcasters’ capabilities further.

While transformative, integrating AI in the broadcasting sector also poses challenges. AI-driven automation may lead to job displacement, reducing human creativity and employment opportunities. Additionally, reliance on AI for content curation risks promoting bias, as algorithms may inadvertently favour certain narratives or demographics, potentially marginalising diverse voices.

To overcome these issues, broadcasters should urgently invest in retraining programs to upskill employees, ensuring they can work alongside AI. Furthermore, it is crucial to implement rigorous oversight and ethical guidelines for AI algorithms. This will help maintain balanced, unbiased content, preserve the integrity and diversity of broadcasting, and ensure that AI-driven content curation does not inadvertently promote bias.
