Bridging Utility and Aesthetics

On 19th March 1932, Sydney Harbour Bridge was inaugurated.

Sydney Harbour Bridge, which spans Sydney Harbour from the central business district (CBD) to the North Shore, is one of the two most important landmarks of the city of Sydney in Australia, the other being the Opera House.

The bridge runs from Dawes Point to Milsons Point. The bridge has the nickname The Coathanger,' which is attributed to its arch-based design. It carries rail, vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The bridge walk is on the eastern side and the cycleway is on the western side of the bridge.

An Engineering Marvel

The bridge affords a beautiful view, especially at the time of sunset. It is the largest steel arch bridge on our planet, and is a pivotal attraction of Sydney's tourism. The bridge is also the tenth longest spanningarch bridge in the world. Before the construction of new Port Mann Bridge in Vancouver, in 2012, Sydney Harbour Bridge held the distinction of being the world's widest long-span bridge with its 160 ft width. The bridge is 1149 m long. The weight of the steelwork used in the construction of the bridge, which included the arch and approach spans, is 52,800 tonnes.
