INDIA FINDS NEW EXPORT FRONTIERS
The Machinist
|June 2026
Indian manufacturing exports are expanding into newer global markets as engineering, technology and value-added sectors gain momentum.
-
India’s manufacturing exports are steadily finding new buyers and new destinations across the world, signalling a major shift in the country’s trade story. For years, Indian exports were largely associated with traditional markets and commodity driven sectors. Today, however, the picture is changing rapidly. From engineering products and telecom equipment to ships and transport machinery, Indian manufacturers are beginning to establish a stronger presence in newer markets across Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The latest export data for FY26 points to a broader transformation underway within India’s manufacturing ecosystem. According to government estimates, India’s export diversification efforts generated an additional $202.2 million in exports during the financial year. The gains came through expansion into more than 1,800 new product market combinations globally, reflecting a conscious effort by exporters to reduce dependence on a limited set of countries and products.
What makes this shift significant is the changing nature of the export basket itself. The growth is no longer being driven only by traditional sectors such as textiles, gems or basic agricultural goods. Instead, high value manufacturing and technology intensive industries are beginning to play a larger role in India’s export growth.
One of the standout sectors has been shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing. Exports of ships, boats and floating structures emerged as the single largest contributor to new market expansion, adding nearly 57 million dollars across 19 new markets. Total exports from this category touched $4.1 billion in FY26, underlining India’s growing capabilities in specialised industrial manufacturing.
