Mauritania Emerges as Energy Investment Hotspot with Gas and Green Hydrogen Upside
Offshore Africa
|May 2025
Mauritania is rapidly positioning itself as a frontier energy investment destination, leveraging its newly developed LNG capacity and large-scale green hydrogen potential.
-

The launch of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas field project by end-2024 marks a strategic entry into global LNG markets at a time of rising demand from Europe and Asia.
Kosmos Energy and its partners have ramped up operations at the GTA floating LNG facility, where all four liquefaction trains are now fully operational. Production has begun and is performing ahead of expectations, with the first cargo exported and a second lifting underway. Annual production is expected to hit 2.45 million tonnes of LNG, with potential upside to exceed this through modest facility upgrades.
The GTA development is forecast to boost Mauritania's fiscal space by 0.5% of GDP from 2024, according to the IMF. With a small population base of 4.4 million, this translates into a significant macroeconomic tailwind, enabling greater investment in infrastructure, debt management, and growth diversification.
