Did a British Peer Overstep in Ghana Gold Mining Dealings?

A former head of the British army is facing fresh questions over whether he misused his position in the House of Lords to advance his private financial interests in a Ghanaian gold mine.

Documents obtained by The Guardian reveal that General Lord Richard Dannatt, who holds shares in Blue International, asked the UK's high commissioner to Ghana to intervene on behalf of the company's struggling gold mining subsidiary, Future Global Resources.

In January 2024, as the company fought to retain control of its Bogoso-Prestea mine—one of Ghana's largest—Dannatt wrote directly to then-High Commissioner Harriet Thompson. He claimed the issue was “in the UK national interest” and requested a meeting with her to discuss securing support from Ghana's Ministry of Lands.
